Many things can be said about what it is to live in Shotley or Erwarton, but what do you think? Below are some issues to get you thinking, and then you should email us or visit the You Tell Us page to, well, tell us what you think about your Shotley.

Shotley Lodge boarded up - but youth facilities are desperately needed

YOUNG PEOPLE - With few opportunities locally to meet socially and express themselves creatively, life can be pretty dull for young people round here. Tell us what you think would improve the situation. Lots of groups in the villages do good work with young people but recruiting and retaining volunteers is difficult. What can be done about this? And what facilities would suit you?

TRANSPORT - Do the buses go where you want, when you want? Are the fares reasonable? Has Buzabout made a difference? How can we discourage so much car-use? (or should we bother?)

ROAD SAFETY - We all know the B1456 is a nightmare and that extra development is going to make a bad road worse. What is your solution? Cycle paths, safe crossings, improved junctions; where would you put them? Any other ideas?

HEALTH - We are fortunate to have a well resourced surgery in the centre of the community, but what if it closed because of centralisation by the Practice? And what about access to NHS dentistry, and do you have enough access to health visitors or district nurses? What treatment would be better given closer to home rather than all those stressful trips to Ipswich Hospital? Is it dificult to get hold of a doctor or nurse during evenings and weekends?

SOCIAL CARE - What can we do to keep the people in our community who need social care, because of their age, fraility or disability, close to their families and friends? Share your experiences and ideas with us.

LOCAL ECONOMY - More people in Shotley and Erwarton commute to work than the County average. We also work longer hours and there are proportionately more self employed. There is very little local employment opportunity. Do we want to see new jobs created? If so what type and where? If you run your own business do you feel you are getting the right sort of support and help?

SERVICES AND FACILITIES - Compared to some we are not too badly off; we have a total of four pubs, a sailing club, a chippy, a primary school and a playgroup (kidzone). The 2 post offices seem well used as is the Village Hall. However, if you want adult education, indoor sports, a pool, a gym, a library (other than mobile), a trip to the cinema, etc you have to travel. What would you like to see provided in the area? DEVELOPMENTS - What sort of development would you like to see on the HMS Ganges site? Are you concerned about the impact on your lifesyle of the proposed Bathside Bay container terminal? Do you support the Marina's plans for a new road and houses

ENVIRONMENT - Are there areas of the villages that have been neglected, look tatty, conceal dangers or let everyone down? What small things would you change if you could? Is aircraft noise an issue for you?
