Transport and Road Safety Survey

Shotley Transport 100 event, 21 August 2005

local people participating in the Parish Plan Committee's transport survey An old bus at the Bristol Arms Shotley Gate

At the event, the Parish Plan Steering Committee had a table, and asked local people to complete a simple questionnaire with the following questions. We are very grateful to those of you who did. Your responses are shown below and will be fed into the Parish Plan itself.

"We are gathering more information about transport and road safety. This will help us make recommendations in the Parish Plan about these issues. Please answer as many questions as you can."

Under 19? Do you have an Xcape Card. Has it made it easier for you to travel to places you need to get to?

Everyone - Which places in Shotley are most dangerous for road users and pedestrians? How can we make them safer?

Cyclists - Where do you cycle from and to? What can be done to make cycling safer in Shotley?

Everyone - How can the public transport service be improved?

If you have a disability are there specific improvements you would like to see that would make travelling safer or easier for you?

1

Around the villages. Best thing would be to use bikes instead of cars!

Already very good More publicity /understanding of the service would gain more usage (use local website)

2

Old Boot corner Cut down high hedges

Too dangerous to cycle on road - cycle lanes needed

Get rid of First bus

3

School Flashing yellow lights at opening times

4

Outside school

A more attractive bus service with reasonable price fares

5

Narrow road between Shotley/Shotley Gate. No footpath. Over grown.

Reduce fares Earlier buses to connect with early trains to London

6

No but would card for general use / discounts for frequent use

Double bend after Rose Pub

Cheaper - more frequent

7

Area around school

Don't usually cycle

Maybe more buses, better advertised, at peak times - although cost effectiveness would be an issue

8

Outside Shotley Primary School. Needs a crossing and lollipop lady

Cycle path continuous between Shotley and Shotley Gate

Make fares cheaper to encourage greater use

9

Bends - especially junction with Holbrook Road (?B1080) Strand at Wherstead - people go far too fast

Don't build anymore house in Shotley Gate Do away with cars Build a rail link to Ipswich Slow signs on bends More signs warning that there are cyclist about

Have an evening service which is more frequent - especially Friday night & Saturday night. Travel -line information must be accurate - I've been given wrong information twice!

10

By Battery Cottages & Eastview Terrace. Outside school needs some form of crossing

Possible patch across fields to school from Shotley Gate

Cheaper fairs for all

11

B1450 dangerous over all route

Cycle paths

Too many cars

12

14

By school Ban parking 100 yds outside school

Increased frequency Cheaper fares

Make one fare structure for all

16

Just after Packards Farm towards Cherry Gardens, paths could be wider

Shotley Gate to everywhere, provide cycle tracks

Feel this is ok

17

Shotley Primary School - needs a lollipop lady

Have cyclists signs up, cycle lanes marked on roads like in Ipswich

Buses running on time! More security for Bus drivers especially the late buses.

Easier access for those with mobility problems

18

Outside the school. A zebra or other type of crossing.

19

Outside school is very, very dangerous

Making the path wider near the Shotley Rangers

It is good now. Needs an evening service

20

School needs Zebra crossing of some sort

Reliability More services at night

21

Crossing the road from one pavement to the other outside Eastview Terrace.Pedestrian crossing would make it safer

Slow down signs & cycle pathsCycle from Bristol Hill to school, and around the green

Buzz around is very good. Another one would be better

22

Educate the drivers

Educate the drivers

Fares slightly cheaper

23

By school (parents not parking in village car park but along the main road)

More often & cheaper

24

Cross over point at Netherhall Cottages - pedestrians Parking outside the primary school - for drivers

More frequent bus service in evening

25

None found so far Enforce speed limits

Queensland to Shotley Church

26

Where there are parked cars

27

School entrance

Bus do not turn up

28

A cycle path along the peninsular

30

Whole route

Cycle paths

Cheaper

31

Daughter

Daughter - helps with transport costs - can to into town/across town/anytime/anyday. Not accepted anywhere else

Corner garage to Chelmo

First & Buzzabout to run alternately not at same time

33

School!!

34

The bends between Shotley and Shotley Gate

1/2 hourly service Shotley - Ipswich - not run by First!

35

Nothing to complain about Roads have stayed the same but drivers have changed

Its very good Most drivers very good

36

Parked cars around Shotley Rose on the street. Cars come up hill very fast. Turning in and out of drives is hard.

More road safety in school! Children cycle up and down banks outside Village Hall and down the hill, and go across the road!

37

Bristol Hill - speed restrictors

Later buses, higher profile, regular service

38

Those places where footpaths cross the main road. Provision of crossing points possibly the light controlled

From Shotley Gate to The Street. Provision of a cycle path

Less daytime services, more evening services

39

Battery Cottages Opposite Ganges

It should be possible to book Buzabout more in advance

Too many cars on main road into Gate - difficult to cross Cars drive too fast, sometimes along road to marina.

48

Cherry Garden bend

More frequent

49

Outside Rose pub Speed bumps

Shotley - Ipswich Speed bumps

More regular

50

Cherry Tree Gardens area Suicide corner Bend at Shotley Boot Don't build on Ganges site

More careful drivers and less speed

A reliable bus company with good drivers, upkeep of buses and punctuality

Public transport to have disabled friendly buses

51

By providing footpaths!

Slow traffic to within legal limits

Evening service improved

52

Outside the school Misuse of residential streets by "young" motorists

Train cyclists to give signals and greater respect to car drivers. Know their vehicle and its capabilities Lights and high visibility

Punctuality. Low cost to encourage use. Not only OAP deserve cheaper travel.

Daughter uses buses as "disabled" person - very good but punctuality causes concern, and sometimes misbehaviour by students

53

Between Stingham and the Garage Put cycle path here

Around the village

Fine as it is

54

Between Shotley Walk and Old Boot Inn

55

Opposite the Rose and in The Street

Put in cycle paths

More buses and cheaper fares

56

By Shotley Boot No footpath

Running to timetable Cheaper fares

57

Yes

Shotley Boot - widen the road or lower speed limit Freston crossroads

We don't because the road is not safe enough If there was a cycle path we would use it a lot How about the track from Erwarton Hall to Chelmo

Don't randomly cancel without telling anyone
