Shotley Parish Council meeting, 16 Nov 2006

This is a very brief summary of just some of the key points from the Shotley Parish Council meeting, held on 16 November 2006. More details will be in the minutes (available following the December meeting) or by contacting the Clerk: parishclerk@myshotley.com, 01473 788248.

  • A member of the public raised their concern for the safety of primary school children due to parents parking along the road outside the school. The parish council and school keep asking parents to use the village hall car park, very nearby.
  • Cllr David Wood reported that the County Council had that day [16 Nov] secured a new Shotley bus service to replace First's withdrawn service from 1 Jan. <buses>
  • The council discussed the options for the future of the tennis / basketball courts in Shotley Gate. Rather than spend money now on repairs, it was decided to consult local people on how to improve the facilities, for the Parish Plan Implementation Board (PPIB) to consider and recommend at the next parish council meeting. See press release.
  • It was agreed to spend up to £1000 on implementing the recommendations of the RoSPA report on the safety of our two play areas.
  • The first £5,000 of grant from the Babergh East Local Strategic Partnership had now been received, and paid to the local groups agreed by the PPIB.
  • Bathside Bay: advice received from Hutchison Ports was that the major grant for Shotley's amenity and environment would be before works start approx four years ahead. Cllr Steel will investigate whether this should have been once permission is granted <more>
  • There was a report about the future direction of the Shotley Peninsula Parish Alliance, following the success of the HMS Ganges inquiry. There was scope for more joint working, but this will remain informal.
  • Consideration of new and replacement notice boards will be finalised at the next meeting, to ensure the best value for money. If you have views on where new notice boards should be sited, please contact the Clerk or info@myshotley.com
  • The problem with bins and vehicles parked on a pavement had eased following correspondence. But has still been referred to the County Council.
  • Following enquiries by councillors, no objections were raised to the planning applications re 17 Kitchener Way; 1 Box Iron Row; and land adjacent to 84 Kingsland.
  • The draft precept budget was discussed. It is likely to see an increase in precept for 2007/08 due partly to increased staffing and playground maintenance costs, but also due to a general increase in the level of service Shotley residents receive from the Parish Council. To be finalised at the next meeting.
  • The external auditors have raised concerns about previous years accounts. However, the internal auditors' report notes improvements in the standard of internal controls last year.
  • The Clerk reported that: a bin in Lloyds Road is to be repaired; the dog litter bin at Marsh Lane has been moved; Anglian Water were being asked to tidy up the appearance at the front of the toilets in Bristol Hill; SCC had been asked to look at what winter weather precautions they can take on the bridge at Golden Wood following damage; and the overcrowding of chickens in Bull Field had eased but noise remained a problem.
  • The Ambulance Trust speaker about the community responder scheme was unable to attend.
  • Next meeting of the Parish Council: 21 December 2006 at 7.15pm in the Village Hall. All welcome.
