This is a very brief summary of just some of the key points from the Shotley Parish Council meeting, held on 17 January 2008. More details will be in the minutes or by contacting the Clerk: 01473 788248, parishclerk@myshotley.com,

  • The Chairman welcomed a number of members of the public, who wished to discuss bus services. They were reminded that Gemini / Far East Travel had decided for their own reasons, prior to the December SPC meeting, to cease routing the 97H through Kingsland from February. The PC had no power to make decisions on bus services, and moreover had received no request from the bus company to support retaining this part of the route. SPC has taken a balanced view on this issue, which reflects the mixed comments made by parishioners. This issue would be on the agenda for the 21 February meeting if there were developments.
  • Further ideas were put forward for improving safety at the point (East View Terrace) where children cross the road if they are walking from Shotley Gate to school.
  • Cutting the hedges at East View Terrace has been arranged. Councillors wished to thank Ian Peters for kindly offering to do this at a greatly reduced cost.
  • Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Tricia Gibson hoped that local people would attend the Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting on Tuesday 29 January, if they had issues to raise.
  • Tricia also announced that she will be using the SID speeding equipment around the parish and peninsula.
  • Motorists who park on the verge at Kingsland / The Street will be formally warned by the police not to.
  • Babergh DC had approved the planning application by Haylink to build the spine road through the HMS Ganges site. SPC expressed their disappointment.
  • It was agreed to lodge a formal complaint to Babergh against their decision not to release key documents in relation to granting the Certificate for Lawful Development at HMS Ganges.
  • SPC's response to the amendments to the HMS Ganges Reserved Matters retirement community application, was sent to Babergh (copy available on www.MyShotley.com)
  • A new grass cutting contractor was agreed. This will improve flexibility and reduce costs.
  • Plans to employ a new Community Warden had progressed, and the post could now be advertised in Noticeboard, the Church magazine and on MyShotley.com. This post would significantly improve maintenance of grounds and communications in the Parish.
  • An SPC team will be entered in the Big Shotley Quiz
  • Planning applications - the Council had no objection to:
    • 36 Great Harlings (extension)
    • 1 Charity Farm Cottages (summer house)
  • The application for 25 Kirkton Close had been granted.
  • It was noted that the farmer of the meadow above the marina had cleared shrubs lining the Marsh Lane path, to enable equipment access.
  • The protest by local people about the state of repair of the HMS Ganges mast, was noted. SPC had raised concerns about this with the District Council last Summer.
  • Cllr Steel had written a report about a greater role for the Shotley Community in the future.
  • Next meeting: 21 February 2008 (village hall).
