Shotley Parish Council meeting, 17 Aug 2006

This is a very brief summary of just some of the key points from the Shotley Parish Council meeting, held on 17 August 2006. More details will be in the minutes (available following the September meeting) or by contacting the Clerk: parishclerk@myshotley.com, or 01473 788248.

  • PC Chris Garrod reported that there were two real crimes last month. Due to nuisance reports, he has established a 'task plan' re youths gathering in the Shotley Gate play area. Chris has met a resident following a concern raised via MyShotley.com about police visibilty.
  • Chris agreed to follow up a concern raised about cars blocking a public footpath opposite East View Terrace.
  • The Council considered what action should now be taken on the former HMS Ganges. We had written to Babergh District Council, making it clear that they should now propose how to engage the local community to find a sustainable solution for the site. Following their initial response, it was agreed to write again.
  • A response to the Parish Council's letter to Haylink was anticipated.
  • Meanwhile, interesting responses about future of the site were being received through MyShotley.com, and Cllr Steel will follow up potential sources of support.
  • Cllr Steel reported the publication of the minutes of Babergh's consideration of the planning application for the Marina development. The Marina management would be approached regarding Shotley Lodge.
  • A full response had been received from Babergh regarding the withdrawal of the majority of the public toilet facilities in Bristol Hill. This was due to low use, and no further action seems possible at this stage.
  • The new bench at the play area in Shotley Gate was now installed (responding to public demand), and the similar bench at the Kingsland play area would soon be in place.
  • Weed growth around the tennis courts would be cleared again shortly
  • The litter warden for Shotley Gate reported that she had collected four and a half bags full of litter from the Shotley Gate playing fields area in one week. It was therefore agreed to install an additional litter bin actually in the play area, which would be emptied by our warden rather than the District Council.
  • It was agreed to consult members of the peninsular youth group to determine what equipment to install for teenagers at both play areas, and then to seek funding.
  • The Parish Plan Implementation Board would be meeting soon. There was a need to recruit more members, particularly due to the very sad death of member Neil Diplock recently.
  • Cllr Peters reported that the Shotley & Erwarton Business and Information Directory had been distributed to all households (with temporary exception of Erwarton), thanked those involved, reported that copies were being made available via public places, and that a press release would be issued. The Clerk offered to issue to new residents arriving in the village.
  • Due to the apparently ridiculous situation where both bus companies serving Shotley currently run services at almost exactly the same timetabled times, Cllr Wood agreed to take this up informally.
  • It was agreed to grant Shotley Drama Group £1,250 towards village hall lighting equipment.
  • The Council noted the enforcement action on 22 Orwell View Road's aerial mast. Cllr Bugg fed back from his local enquiries.
  • Three planning applications were considered with no objections - 15 Garden Close, 6 Gate Farm Road, and a revised one for 10 Kitchener Way. It was reported that 51 Kitchener Way and 1 Diamond Cottages were approved by Babergh.
  • Tree Preservation Orders had been served on all trees on the Ganges site. A list and maps are on MyShotley.com .
  • The Council had been asked to relocate the new dog bin at the top of Marsh Lane due to access for farm machinery.
  • A letter would be written to Babergh, thanking and praising them for the very successful summer fun activities.
  • Cllr Matthews reported that scaffolding had been erected near the play area on the Parish's land without permission.
  • The outward-opening of a property's gate in Shotley Street was discussed.
  • A letter of appreciation had been received relating to the way the PC had handled the fire damage to the play area matting.
  • Next meeting of the Parish Council: 21 September 2006 at 7.15pm
