This is a very brief summary of the key points from the meeting of Shotley Parish Council, held on 21 February 2008. More details will be in the minutes or by contacting the Clerk: 01473 788248, parishclerk@myshotley.com,

  • A large number of members of the public had attended, to hear whether the parish council would support reinstating the Kingsland part of bus route 97H, following the operator's withdrawal for their commercial reasons.
  • The council had received divergent comments from parishioners in recent months, with some supporting the routing because it helped older people use the bus without walking to the main road, and some complaining that it was a safety hazard in the narrow roads and adjacent to the children's playground.
  • The council had decided to invite the bus company to enter into a joint formal understanding, in which both parties (council and company) would commit to share views and consult each other on possible service changes. As this had been agreed (possibly a unique partnership), the PC felt able to consider whether to support the routing reinstatement. On a very close vote (4-3) it was agreed to do so for two services a day going through the estate, should the bus company wish to do so.
  • Following the advert for a Shotley Community Warden, several people had applied. Interviews would be held next week.
  • It was agreed to participate again in this year's Spring Clean litter pick, which will be held on Saturday 5 April.
  • In order to make progress on the long-planned Shotley Gate tennis courts project, it was agreed to appoint Dina Bedwell as project manager.
  • The council opted not to make a formal response to consultation on the proposed SWISS learning centre.
  • Work had not yet started on repairing the breaches along the River Stour footpath following the special meeting of the parish council on 8 February which decided to accept a quote.
  • The results of Suffolk County Council's latest speed survey in Shotley confirmed the speeding problem in certain places - including just past Gayford Terrace and Nether Hall (on Ipswich Rd to Shotley Gate). This data will be used as appropriate.
  • The proposed parking restrictions in Bristol Hill were rejected by the Parish Council, as they appeared to give little benefit to parishioners, may damage business, and better use could be made of the cost. The proposals for Queen Victoria Drive, however, were supported.
  • It was agreed to request additional car parking adjacent to the Kingsland Post Office, from SCC.
  • There was no objection to the planning application relating to 10 Queensland.
  • The Parish Council offered congratulations to Shotley Primary School for an outstanding OFSTED report.
  • The Council were dissapointed to see that 14 crimes were recorded in January, 11 in one night.
  • Installing a bollard in Lloyd Road, to reduce vehicle access to the park and play area, was being progressed.
  • Real concern was expressed by several councillors about the apparently unauthorized removal of a section of woodland and the footpath sign in front of a house at the end of Stourside, and it was agreed to pursue a remedy.
  • Next meeting: 6 March 2008 (special review meeting, village hall).
