Shotley Parish Council meeting, 21 Dec 2006

This is a very brief summary of just some of the key points from the Shotley Parish Council meeting, held on 21 December 2006. More details are in the minutes on MyShotley.com, or by contacting the Clerk: parishclerk@myshotley.com, 01473 788248.

  • PC Chris Garrod gave a report and introduced new Police Community Support Officer Ilona Turley, who is now also covering this area. Ilona sported the new bicycle uniform and has been issued with a bike which she is already putting to good use.
  • Chris reported that since August there have been 24 crimes reported in Shotley - a reducing trend, so offered congratulations to local people for our continued efforts to reduce crime. He offered personal and tailored crime prevention advice if people contact him.
  • Useful new powers to deal with vehicles used in an anti social manner were described. Witnesses should contact Chris.
  • Police Direct was promoted as a new messaging system about local policing issues. For more info click here.
  • Information packs are available for anyone wishing to set up a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
  • Jonathan Needle of the Ambulance Trust gave a talk about setting up a local community responder scheme. This is where volunteers who have been trained attend emergency calls received by the NHS Ambulance Service, providing first aid until an ambulance arrives. We already have four volunteers but need more to make it viable. Equipment would be held at the Shotley Gate Post Office. A bid will also be made to the Parish Council for towards the costs.
  • The Parish Council agreed to the Parish Plan Implementation Board's recommendation to commit to a project to improve and upgrade the sporting and recreation facilities for older young people and adults at the tennis courts in Shotley Gate as soon as possible. A design brief was agreed and since submitted to the Babergh East Local Strategic Partnership for the use of our grant. Subject to that, quotations will be sought and plans and consulted upon. <more>
  • The PPIB reported the continued early success of the new Shotley Youth Club.
  • Several members of Shotley Parish Council, together with Suffolk Preservation Society, met with Haylink, developers and owners of the former HMS Ganges site. The meeting was constructive, and the start of a dialogue between the Parish Council and Haylink, intended to secure a sustainable development which meets the needs of the existing and future Shotley community. A process of local consultation, led by Shotley Parish Council, will be planned for later in the new year to engage the community in expressing its aspirations for the site. (Keep an eye on www.MyShotley.com for updates)
  • Since the Haylink meeting, the developers had sent a suggested timetable and possible revised scheme details. The Council agreed to respond that the timetable was too short.
  • It was agreed to contribute £500 to the second edition of the Shotley Business and Information Directory, following the great success of the first edition.
  • There were no objections to a planning application relating to 13 Lower Harlings, and the PC noted approvals by Babergh re 3 Gate Farm Road, 17 Kitchener Way, 19 Garden Close, 84, Kingsland and 1 Box Iron Row.
  • The monthly finance report included the Precept for 2007/08 which was agreed. The increase over the current year was felt by members to be justified due to better management of the Parish and improved facilities for parishioners.
  • The Clerk reported that the cleared Coopers Close allotment plots are now let, but three more uncleared plots remain available (at three years free rent if tenants clear it themselves).
  • A person came forward at the meeting and confirmed that he removed the wire netting from the bridge at Golden Wood as he considered it dangerous to his dog. He was willing to pay for the materials removed.
  • Next meeting of the Parish Council: 18 January 2007 at 7.15pm in the Village Hall. All welcome.
