GANGES INQUIRY OPENS TUESDAY, 14TH FEBRUARY - BE THERE!
We
feel it is very important to have as many local people as possible
at Babergh District Council offices in Corks Lane, Hadleigh for
the start of the Ganges Public Inquiry on Tuesday, 14 February
at 10.00 a.m. There will be a good deal of media interest on the
first day and we need a good presence to demonstrate the strength
of local feeling that 325 new houses at Shotley is too many -
so please turn up if you possibly can.
Our
peninsula wide appeal for funds to support our case at the Inquiry
has already brought a magnificent response. We have so far received
over £9,000 from more than 200 residents and are most grateful
for this generous response. Taking into account contributions
kindly made by the parish councils - another £8,000 roughly
- we are on the way to achieving our target of £25,000.
Anyone
still planning to make a donation should send a cheque made payable
to "Ganges Fund" to Elspeth Iskander c/o Woolverstone
Parish Council, Old Barn, Main Road, Woolverstone, Suffolk, IP9
1AX.
Anyone
with a good idea on how to help raise the money still needed should
contact Simon Ross Pearce of the SPPA Fundraising Group on 780009.
All
the evidence to be presented to the Inquiry is now in - the closing
date was Tuesday 17th January. Our planning consultant Dr. Wendy
Le-las is very happy with the information she has been able to
gather and believes we have a very strong argument that Shotley
is simply an unsustainable community because it is so far from
jobs, shops and services. Suffolk County Council has also made
a very detailed case against the proposed scale of the development
which they say would alter the character of the area to an unacceptable
degree.
Our
traffic expert, Simon Blinkhorne, is mounting a robust case that
there is no prospect of improving public transport to a degree
that will take private cars off the road. A powerful 16 minute
video - "B1456 - A Road on Overload" has been submitted
by the SPPA to support his arguments that the main road is already
at capacity. Other witnesses are being called to give evidence
on local issues
There
will be a special evening session at Shotley community hall during
the inquiry to enable local residents to make their views known
without having to travel to the main venue at Babergh District
Council offices at Corks Lane, Hadleigh - the date is yet to be
arranged but will be circulated the moment we know it.
Once
again many thanks to all those who have given their time to prepare
evidence and money to support our cause. Please don't let up on
the fundraising!
