Shotley Parish Council today welcomed the decision by a Government Minister to reject a planning application to build 325 houses in the village and called for a public debate on the future of the historic HMS Ganges site.
The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government announced today that the environmental impact of the proposal was too great and conflicted with her policy of building sustainable communities. The application had been the subject of a Public Inquiry and a report by an independent inspector.
The Chair of Shotley Parish Council, Richard Wrinch, said “Whilst we are pleased that the Secretary of State has agreed with us that this proposal is too large and will put too great a strain on the natural environment, local services and roads, we still have to find a solution that works.”
Shotley Parish Council is calling on Babergh District and Suffolk County Councils to take the initiative and work with local people, the HMS Ganges Association and potential developers to put together a plan that respects the history of the site and meets the economic and social needs of the area.
“The potential of the site is enormous and there are some great ideas for what could happen there.” said Councillor Wrench. “Let us work together to unlock that potential.”
