Shotley Community Emergency Plan

15 April 2008

The first Emergency Planning meeting was a sucess. It discussed how
the plan would be developed and what organisations and groups should be invited to be part of the wider group

When completed the plan will be reviewed every six months and
exercised annually

There will be a five minute presentation on the developing plan at the annual parish meeting on Thursday 22 May

The next Emergency Planning meeting will be on Tuesday 3 June at
19.30 hours at the Shipwreck PH

Are you interested in planning and/or supporting the emergency services in the event of a major incident occurring in Shotley?

Shotley Parish Council have formed a working group and seek community volunteers to join them in developing a Community Emergency Plan.

The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 imposes a duty on “principal local authorities”, i.e. County and District/Borough councils, to prepare and maintain emergency plans. In turn, parish councils have been asked to prepare their own plans to provide local assistance and parish information in support of the emergency services.

The aim of the plan is to outline Shotley's organisation and its reaction during an emergency, and to list the resources available within the community area, which could be called upon in the event of a major emergency when outside assistance from emergency services and local authorities is delayed.

The objectives of this plan are, in the event of an emergency, to:

  • Identify actions to be taken;
  • Identify specific procedures to be followed; and
  • Provide information.

The working group will receive information as to how the emergency services manage a major incident, then analyse specific threats that the community of Shotley face e.g.

  • the impact of extreme weather
  • an incident that forces the closure of the B1456
  • avian flu outbreak
  • an indirect event occurring in a related village or from the Harwich Harbour.

We would then start to produce a bespoke plan. The Community Emergency Plan will support the work undertaken by Suffolk Resilience Forum and seeks to prepare Shotley in responding to a major incident.

Interested ? Then please come along to the first working group on 8 April 7.30 at the Shipwreck or call 07845 875238 or mail info@myshotley.com for more info
