Shotley spring clean

We may have won a battle, but we haven't won the war…not yet…

They were everywhere. In the bushes, behind the hedges, under cars. Even camouflaging in innocent looking children's playgrounds and pretending to be sunbathing by the river. But we got them!

We met at 10am. The troops gathered at the two meeting points, Kirkton Close green and the Village Hall, undercover of the cloudy sky and scattered rain. It was cold, but the thought of conquering the enemy warmed our hearts.

Our leaders, Dina and Eileen made sure we had enough weapons and protective clothing…not to mention the body bags…. There were nineteen of us all together, not many for the size of the battle field, but we were determined to win.

It took us two hours, the sweat was pouring off us, our legs were starting to fail us and our hands were tired of gripping so hard, but still, we carried them all the way to their final destination, in their body bags. We gathered fifteen by the sailing club and six by the Village Hall.

We had won this battle, this time, thanks to our wonderful volunteers and the support of Shotley Parish Council. Spring Clean Suffolk Week was a success in Shotley and the County Council are removing the remains of what used to be drinkable and ebible, amongst other things that we will not disclose in order to protect those of a frail disposition.

It costs Shotley Parish Council £89.50 a week for two litter wardens to keep our Village clean. But they need your help. Please place your unwanted crisp packet in your pocket if you are not near a bin. Please remember to use plastic bags when taking your dog for a walk. And to allow our children to enjoy the playgrounds safely, please do not take glass bottles and then break them. It could be your little brother or sister that gets hurt.

To our volunteers, a huge big thank you!!! I hope to see you all gain soon, and would love to see some new ones when we try to conquer the enemy again, soon.
