Speeding in Shotley

Dear MyShotley,

We needed to contact someone to try and action something in the Bristol Hill / Lower Harlings area of Shotley Gate.  And having found your website so helpful and informative we thought you were the best person to contact.

Myself and my husband moved to Lower Harlings on 21st June.  It is a lovely area and we are very happy, the neighbours have been welcoming and we have settled in well.

However things have taken a very bad turn for the worse, as in the early hours (approx 6am) on Sunday 15 th July one our of cats was hit by a car.  He is a young black 3 year old cat, with a reflective collar, and is now fighting for his life at the vets.  He made his way home in very bad pain, so we are not sure where he was hit, but believe it must have been on the main Lower Harlings road, or very nearby.

We felt like we had to do something and so we are contacting you.  Is there anyway we can put forward a suggestion to the parish council for a lower speed limit along Lower Harlings and the top of Bristol hill, or maybe speed cameras/speed bumps?  Maybe just a large warning sign to suggest people slow down would help?

In addition to the many cats and dogs in the area, there is a small green park area for the children, as well as the ice cream van that stops on Lower Harlings.  We are very upset about our cat, devastated in fact, as he is like a son to us.  But what if it had been someone's child?

We really do think we need to work on slowing the traffic down, especially the ‘younger boy racers', their noisy car engines racing around do not help the situation either.  And speaking to our neighbours, they are very much in agreement.

We moved from close to Nacton Road in Ipswich (a very busy main road), where our cats were never hit by cars,  and within a few weeks of moving to a village one of them may not ever come home.  It is a very sad state of affairs and I cannot stress how deeply hurt we are by this tragic event.

We thank you in advance for any assistance you can give us.

Kind Regards

Mr and Mrs Lowe, Shotley Gate

Editor's note
Following this email, the website Editor and the Clerk to the Parish Council have been in further correspondence with Mr & Mrs Lowe, with a view to supporting their requests.

Meanwhile, we appeal to all readers to keep to the speed limit, which is there for a reason. Your children and pets are at risk.

If you have any suggestions for making Shotley's roads safer and slower, please write to us.

Unfortunately, Mr & Mrs Lowe's cat has been put to sleep due to his injuries. We extend our sympathy to them
