MusicShotley

Local(ish) band the Usual Suspects

This is the MusicShotley page, which it is hoped will be built up into a comprehensive resource devoted to the local music scene in the Shotley area.

If you want to contribute content, or provide details of your band, please shout. Obviously details of gigs / performances, and your reviews would go here. But also other stuff - whatever you think. If you would like to include a link, advertise, use info@myshotley.com and we will do the rest.

And it doesn't matter what sort of music - people in the community are interested in all sorts, any genre - whether it be a thrash metal band, or do recitals, or even if you are a DJ. And whether amateur or professional.

Would you like to see more live bands in Shotley?

A couple of people are considering bringing live acts into the area and would like to know if there is the demand. They already know what sells well at the Village Hall but would like to know if there is demand for a wider range of tastes.

Contact has been made with The Tuscan Raiders, Deb Warren Band, and The Usual Suspects and they would hope to have at least one local band/act at each gig.  Let us know what you would like to see play on the peninsula - specific bands or genres (rock, blues, indie, C+W, folk, comedy, ballet, dance!), where would be good venues and how much would be prepared to pay. We are a four piece original band who can play covers. We are based on the peninsula (Shotley and Holbrook) and can play any sort of function or gig. Though still only 18 we have gigged all over Suffolk Essex and Norfolk and have a large following. We have been in the top five of the Radio Suffolk Unsigned site for a year and have recorded three original CDs. We are a polished live act - one of the reasons why we regularly gig at the Grapes in Bury , the Steamboat in Ipswich and the Cock and Pye in Ipswich as well as numerous private parties etc. Anyway we have a big local fan base and can pull in punters from far and wide - so we are happy to do charity gigs as well as any other. You check out our music on www.the-runes.co.uk or at Radio Suffolk Unsigned.

The band was formed in Winter 2004 with Craig Lucas (lead guitar and vocals), Simon Wilson (rhythm guitar), David Steel (bass guitar) and David Bartlett (drums). The band later decided to bring in a more experienced drummer and Catherine Bothwell joined in David's place. The band's break came with a gig at Holbrook Village Hall, which was a great success in front of an almost capacity crowd.

Since then the band has gone from strength to strength and now has a full programme of gigs for the 2005 Summer! The band has completed a number of successful gigs at venues such as The Premier Pool Club, Saxmundham White Hart, The Steam Boat and this years Music In The Park. Keep revisiting this site for updates on our progress. See www.theenemywithin.tk

St Mary's Church Choir

An appreciation from the Choir Pews of Shotley Church.

The Reverend Tim Crosbie gave some examples of the many activities Elizabeth Waite-Gibbs' fitted into her life when he conducted her funeral service in Shotley Church, 12 th Feb. '08.

Shotley Choir has lost not only a valuable voice since Elizabeth's passing but also a person who could be relied upon to help the choir whatever the need.

It is not generally known what an important part Elizabeth played when with Diana, her sister , she produced choir gowns from some dusty corner of the church. They were then supposedly, black (but decorated with touches of mould) sufficient in number to supply a choir of ten but, two more were yet required!

The gowns were taken home, washed and washed again, and, after submitting to the will of Elizabeth and Diana made ready for service!

However, there was a drawback, there were no stoles to compliment the attire!

Did I say ‘draw-back'? To Elizabeth and Diana it proved to be just another challenge! Voluntarily sourcing material, they then made the two new gowns, at least 12 stoles, and 24 sleeve decorations, considering that work just more of their combined ‘Active Service' and, still found time to sing in the choir!

The present day, much depleted, Shotley Church Choir has gowns to spare-we few members are sure we are not the only people in Shotley who can, and are willing, to “Sing Praises to the Honour of His Name,” Membership of our mixed- voice- choir gives you gentle music/singing education; breath control, heart - lung exercise and is spiritually very rewarding.
