Ganges Wood anniversary

Ganges Wood

15 Jul 2007
Many Shotley people turned out despite the initial thunder storm, to celebrate ten years of their community wood.

They ate about 80 free bbq burgers and sausages, drank free beer and wine, played games and quizes, listened to a live band, chatted to each other, cut a special cake, and then released 100 balloons.

Children at Shotley Primary School have the chance of winning a cash prize. if they select the balloon which has travelled furthest.

Thanks to Shotley Parish Council for funding the party, Shotley Youth & Community Project for organising it, Nick Morrell of Town102FM for advertising it, John for the bbq, Jean Smart for the cake, and everyonhe who made it a lovely afternoon out.

COMMUNITY WOOD CELEBRATES TENTH BIRTHDAY

On November 29 1997, many adults and children gathered on a bare field to plant a wood.

The Shotley Youth and Community Project are now inviting the people of Shotley to celebrate ten years since the planting of the community woodland at Shotley Gate. The party will take place on Sunday 15th July at 2.00pm at "the glade" in the centre of the wood.

The event, which is free, includes a celebration cake, barbeque, balloon race, nature trail and live acoustic music from local musicians.

The SYCP was founded in 1995 to improve facilities for the young families who had recently moved into the former MoD housing in the area. The Ganges Wood was one of the first woods established in Suffolk in partnership with The Woodland Trust and was created to protect a much used recreation area from future housing development. The area also includes a children's play area, five aside football pitch and tennis and basketball court.

The former Chairperson of SYCP, Anna Long, said that "The fact that a group of people new to the area and to each other were able to raise £25,000 in two years was a tremendous achievement and our beautiful trees and shrubs are a daily reminder of their efforts. We look forward to meeting friends old and new to celebrate the first ten years of Ganges Wood."

We hope to have representatives from the Ganges Association and Woodland Trust with us on the day, and hope you will come and see how your wood has grown.

Bring a picnic and enjoy a slice of celebration cake!
