Container terminal construction unlikely to commence for at least 4 years!

In answer to an enquiry from Shotley Parish Council, Hutchison Ports UK Ltd have explained that commencement of the container terminal development will not begin until contracts have been let for works to be undertaken to the A120. The A120 is currently the subject of various studies and it is likely that a public inquiry will be held into the proposals for the A120, not before 2010, at the earliest.

As part of the planning (Section 106) agreement, Shotley Parish Council will receive £75,000 monies from Hutchison towards improvements to Shotley 'amenity and environment' prior to commencement (i.e. construction or reclamation works) of the Container Terminal Development.

Any further information received, or decisions made, will be reported on this page.

1 Apr 06 Message from Starboard Committee: Thank you to the supporters and many friends of Starboard for your generosity during our campaign against the building of a container port at Bathside Bay, Harwich. We needed to employ a solicitor to fight our case and with your help considerable funds were raised for this. Unfortunately it looks as if the expansion will go ahead. As there is now no course of action left open within our modest means, the group decide to donate all remaining funds to the Shotley Village Hall Committee of Management and to the Viking Forest Project, equally, as groups that contribute to the well being of the Village .
