The next few years will be a challenging time for Shotley. With the support of Shotley Parish Council, Suffolk Acre and funding from the Countryside Agency, the community has now published a report and action plan to meet our current needs, and to help plan for the future.

Local people giving us their views at the Rose Fete, 2004

This process started on 28 January 2004, when almost 100 local people attended a public meeting in Shotley Village Hall.

On 15 December 2005, the Parish Council received the final published Parish Plan, following the most extensive and in depth consultation process ever undertaken in Shotley.

What is the Parish Plan?
The Parish Plan process is a very thorough exercise to raise interest in the village about how we can plan and build for the future. A Parish Plan should reflect the views of all sections of the community; it should identify features and local characteristics that people value; identify local problems and opportunities; spell out how residents would like the community to develop in the future, and prepare a plan of action to achieve this vision.

How are we going to achieve this?

In addition to a variety of public consultation meetings, we are distributing a detailed questionnaire to every home, with a request for every resident over 18 years of age to answer the questions. There is also a separate young persons (age 11-21) questionnaire.

Some villages have had a 95% success rate in questionnaire completion, so let’s see if we can make it 100% in Shotley!

In preparing the questionnaire, we have kept your responses from the first Public Meeting; those of you who came will remember that your ideas were written on charts on the walls of the village hall.

We have held a number of public consultation events throughout the year; as part of the Parish Council AGM, as well as the Shotley School Fete and the Rose Fete. We think that we already have a good idea of some of the key issues that interest. If you have any pet interests or problems that you feel strongly are relevant to life then please get in contact with any one of the Steering Committee members. We will take your suggestions into account as we work over the next few months.

Then what happens?
Once we have detailed responses from you, the Committee will condense the output into a village action plan, which will be made public.

Applications can then be made for funding support for village projects. These applications could be made by the Parish Plan Steering Committee, by specially created groups or by the Parish Council.

Can you help ?
The Steering Committee is very keen to hear from people who would be interested in getting involved in the team, or helping out over the coming months as we engage in further public consultation events, as well as design, build and deliver the Parish questionnaires. For details of how to contact this group or attend its meetings, please see About Us.

Keeping you informed
As well as this website, we will be circulating newsletters to households, which will keep you informed of the latest news and bulletins, as well as upcoming activities and events within the village. But keep an eye on the PROGRESS page on MyShotley.com for the latest.

Unless you tell us what you think, the plans for the future may not reflect your views ! Please do not hesitate to contact us with ideas, suggestions or offers of help.
